DYSTOPIAN DESERT MURAL
What an exciting, dramatic and challenging project! The clients have a passion for collecting contemporary art, and already had a scene like this in mind for their patio before we met to discuss design. Not only was it a delightful challenge to paint an industrial / architectural scene, (a first for me), but it had been some time since I'd painted what I call a “traditional” mural - though the subject matter is far from traditional! With nods to their Northern roots and Teeside, the juxtaposition between ancient Bedouins and modern oil fields and refineries (and is that Block 9 from Glastonbury?) is equal parts fantasy and commentary. A pebble dash texture on this exterior wall, as well as the fact that it was autumn in London took some creative problem solving, but what a dramatic transformation for what had been a very blank white wall on a patio.
